What does a Data Scientist need to know?

Most often, employers seeking Data Scientists will ask for skills such as Python, R and SQL (Glassdoor), as well as skills such as data mining, data analysis and machine learning. Think of your role as a Data Scientist as a hybrid of data hacker, communicator, analyst, and trusted adviser. The combination is extremely powerful and rare. Unsurprisingly, many Data Scientists were previously trained in computer science, economics or mathematics. However, Data Scientists come from all kinds of fields.
 

What does a Data Scientist do?

They are able to bring structure to large quantities of data and make different types of analysis possible. Often data visualization is utilized to present results and to make patterns clear. Data Scientists may also advise executives and managers on the implications of the data for processes, products, and decisions. And, because Data Science can be applied to various industries, you can work in a field that sparks your own personal interest.
 

Why should I switch to a career in Data Science?

According to McKinsey & Company, a global excess demand of 1.5 million new Data Scientists is projected, which is why you will have many doors open as a Data Scientist. The choice to become a Data Scientist is a choice for job security. In five years, it’s going to be very hard to become a manager or marketer without any knowledge of Data Science. The yearly average salary for a Data Scientist in Zurich is around CHF 100’000 (PayScale). Furthermore, professionals in the field of Data Science have reported high demand, high salaries and high job satisfaction. In other words: your job prospects as a graduate are excellent.
